Boat routes are marked in the lake and e.g. on the outdoor activities map, 1:100 000. There’s a boat harbor in the centre of Kemijärvi.

Kemijoki River/ in Kemijärvi and Pelkosenniemi
From Kemijärvi to Keminsaaret approximately 60 km to the main road
From Martti to Pelkosenniemi approximately 100 km for river boating.

The Kemijoki River is Finland’s largest river and an ancient route of travel in war and peacetime. The river is still in its original state and traversable just like millenniums prior. You can take a small boat from Kemijärvi to the Pelkosenniemi parish village and right up to Keminsaaret, continuing upstream requires a river boat. The river doesn’t have very strong rapids, but it is always worth being cautious on the largest rapid water sections of the Kemijoki River at Jänkäläinen and Loukaskoski in Pelkosenniemi.

From Suvanto to Aska approximately 20 km to the main road. The Finnish Maritime Administration has marked the Räkki-Luosto route with boat route markings, and travelling the waterway is still at your own risk. This is a natural waterway and the thawing ice moves the spar buoys. The upper section of the river like basin is a wilderness region and well suited for a variety of activity programmes.

Tenniöjoki River/ in Pelkosenniemi
From Saija to Pelkosenniemi approximately 60 km for river boats. The Tenniöjoki River is an age-old route of travel to Russia and even today, many excursions and fishing trips are made in the area. A fishing trip upstream to Pelkosenniemi would take 2 – 3 days. The river doesn’t have very strong rapids, but it is always worth being cautious on the largest rapid water sections of the Kemijoki River at Jänkäläinen and Loukaskoski in Pelkosenniemi.

Notice: The boating routes in Pelkosenniemi are unofficial, apart from the section between Suvanto and Räkki-Luosto. Travel on the river should be done with care, preferably using a propeller guar on the outboard motor. Rowing on the river is easy and effortless travel.
