Historical Sights of Pyhätunturi

Pyhänkasteenlampi Pond and Waterfall, Pyhätunturi

According to records, the Pyhänkasteenlampi Pond has been used for baptizing Christian Lapps for already over 500 years. Far back in history, Pyhätunturi was a sacred place for the Sámi that was given great respect. Nowadays there is a hiking route to the waterfall from Pyhätunturi where on Midsummer’s Night, maidens can cast their spell on the crystal clear mountain streams.

Uhriharju Ridge, Pyhätunturi

Examples of more pagan activity are evident with the ancient Uhriharju places of idol worship. In practice, the ridge land has throughout history been a hunting ground for deer using pit traps and over the centuries, the forests have been sensibly hunted for good catches.
