Luusua - Juujärvi - Raajärvi - Village Tourism Area / in Kemijärvi

Luusua – Juujärvi – Raajärvi forms a diverse village tourism network. It includes, for instance, a wide range of accommodation alternatives (hotel, bed & breakfast, cabins, farmhouse accommodation, school accommodation, hostel, logger’s cabin and camping ground), activity programmes (off-road routes, scuba diving, husky safaris, treatment services, reindeer farm visits, etc.), two art galleries, Luusua Chapel, Lake Kemijärvi and the Juuvaara hillside, historical spots (hydropower construction, mining history, Luusua jail, Neitiharju with its Stone and Iron Age remnants, village museum, Juujärvi village) and souvenirs (sheep farm handicrafts, natural produce from the dairy farm, wrought iron products, knives, scythes, etc.). These destinations may be visited by, for example, bicycle. A cycling and sight map is available for the area.

When travelling around the Luusua-Juujärvi-Raajärvi area, no traveller can miss the Old Raajärvi Mine Village. In 1960’s and 1970’s there was an iron mine operating in Raajärvi, owned by the Finnish industrial company called Rautaruukki. The mine employed at its best more than 200 men, which made the mine a huge employer at that time. A real mine village grew around the mine, and nowadays travellers have a chance to make a tour of it. New tourism activities of the old mine village respect the memories of the mine: guests can stay in a miners’ old apartment, learn interesting things about the history of the area and experience many activities.
