Raajärvi Village and Misi Area - Mine and War History / in Kemijärvi

The village of Raajärvi lies by a geologically fascinating zone where iron ores have been excavated. The Misi area has deposits of e.g. gabbros, quartzite, mica schist, gneiss and limestone. The old mining village Mainari not only offers its old mining history, but also around 30 kilometres of challenging off-road routes, excellent scuba diving possibilities, skilled blacksmith products (e.g. knives and scythe blades) as well as good accommodation and restaurant services.

The Old Mine Village Mainari operates in the former premises of Raajärvi mine. The mine operated for 11 years from the beginning of the 1960’s on. You can get to know the life of the mine community in this old mine environment.

During the spring 2008 we got some "fresh" old materials of the history of the Raajärvi mine and the war history of Misi area. These materials are situated in the restaurant Mainari. Welcome to experience a real mine village!
