Suvanto Village - the Unique One in Finnish Lapland / in Pelkosenniemi
The only village entirety in Lapland to survive the war, representing Northern Ostrobothnian building traditions. It is a village located on the banks of the River Kitinen with a well preserved village milieu. Some of the peasant architecture dates as far back as the sixteenth century. The village survived destruction of fire during the war and avoided the post-war demolition and rebuilding era. The village has also been awarded by Europa Nostra. Keino-oja has a restored water mill transferred from Härkävaara in grounds with primeval spruce copse. The village of Suvanto is also home to the Mettiäinen Silver Pine Cabins, Art Gallery – Cafeteria Säpikäs and a museum school.
