Fishing spots and fishing cruises
The biggest rapids on Finland’s greatest river run through Pelkosenniemi! The river flows through almost uninhabited wilderness regions between Pelkosenniemi and Savukoski. Fish include grayling, pike, trout, whitefish, perch and the restocked freshwater trout. The region has a catch-and-release policy for trout under 40 cm and grayling under 30 cm.
Fishing permits are available that cover the River Kemijoki from Savukoski to the River Kitinen fork in Pelkosenniemi (Yli-Kemin Yhtenäislupa). Within the Municipality of Pelkosenniemi, the Pelkosenniemi Fishery Collective fishing permit (Pelkosenniemen kalastuskunnan kalastuslupa) is also valid, which lets you fish on the Kemijoki River from the town regions to the town border, in addition to the Kohkonen Reservoir and the Pelkosenniemi Fishery Collective water regions in Luiro. The rivers have salmoniforms and whitefish, so a Provincial Fishing Permit is not sufficient as a permit for River Kemijoki or Luiro.
The most important commodity for Kemijärvi back in the seventeenth century was the valuable dried pike. The Kemijärvi Lake is still thought to be the best place to catch pike in Finland. Genetically Stizostedion lucioperca of the lake Kemijärvi differes from other stocks of Scandinavia. Fish include pike, whitefish and perch.
